Miller Demands Bridge to Steelworkers' Pensions
Calls for aid for workers just months away from retirement before US Steel shutdown
QUEEN'S PARK—NDP MPP Paul Miller grilled the McGuinty Liberals today on the fate of pensions for workers at U.S. Steel-Stelco who were within months of retirement when news broke of the plant closure and layoffs.
“It’s shameful that hundreds of U.S. Steelworkers who worked their whole lives for their pensions will now have to rely on Employment Insurance. The McGuinty government should immediately get on the phone to US Steel–Stelco and demand that they bridge these workers so that they can begin collecting pensions, that they’ve worked a lifetime to earn and that they deserve,” said Miller.
Today in Question Period, Miller grilled the Minister of Economic Development on the fate of pensions for workers at U.S. Steel-Stelco who were within months of retirement when news broke of the plant closure and layoffs. Miller noted that the difference between a pension payment and Employment Insurance is significant.
“Now more than ever, we have to protect worker’s pensions. It’s unfair that people who worked hard all their lives only see their pensions gone at the end of the day,” said Miller.
