Miller Fights to Keep National Steel Car in Hamilton
Calls on McGuinty Government to help keep good paying jobs in Ontario
QUEEN'S PARK—NDP MPP Paul Miller, demanded that the McGuinty Government stop blaming everyone else and take action NOW to protect laid off workers in Ontario. Continuing the fight to help the economy and preserve good paying jobs, Miller grilled the McGuity government in an effort to find out what role - if any - it intends to play to keep National Steel Car in Hamilton.
“When will the Premier contact National Steel Car Chair and CEO Greg Aziz to work out a plan to keep this company operating in Hamilton?” Miller asked during today’s Question Period.
Yesterday Miller met with United Steelworkers Local 1005 – his former local – to discuss the rumoured closure of National Steel Car and its move to Alabama.
“The loss of yet another major Hamilton industry is shocking and this Government has done nothing to stem the tide of these jobs leaving for the United States and elsewhere. As far as I can see, the McGuinty Liberals have simply neglected the jobs file and have done nothing proactive to ensure that these businesses and jobs stay in our communities,” said Miller.
“Now that the Government has been forced to open its eyes to the economic reality being faced by so many laid off workers, when will it take action, when will it work out a process to save these businesses, keep Ontarians working and stimulate our local economy?” he thundered.
Referring to the bail out monies the McGuinty Liberals have ready for the auto sector, Miller demanded: “When will the Premier meet with National Steel Car to find creative solutions, to work out strong, competitive incentives to keep National Steel Car operating in Hamilton?”
