Miller Stands Up for Nortel Pensioners
Calls on McGuinty Government to fulfill obligations on severance, benefits, pensions
QUEEN'S PARK—NDP Pensions Critic Paul Miller took the case of Nortel pensioners to the floor of the Legislative Assembly today.
During Question Period, Miller demanded the McGuinty government fulfill its obligation to the pensioners.
“Why is this Government ignoring the plight of Nortel employees on severance, benefits and pensions and shirking its provincial responsibilities?” asked Miller.
“We’re tired of this Government’s whitewashing rhetoric; we’re tired of them leaving laid-off and unemployed workers in the lurch while they pad the pockets of their consultant friends; and we’re REALLY tired of them playing pensioners like a ping pong game, fobbing them off to other levels of government.”
Miller pressed for answers from Finance Minister Dwight Duncan.
“When will the McGuinty Liberals stop ignoring Nortel and all laid off workers; when will they implement the Arthurs’ recommendation to increase the Pension Benefits Guarantee Fund monthly benefit to $2,500; and when will this government finally stand up for pensioners and laid off workers by enacting Bill 6 which would ensure laid off workers get the severance and back pay owed to them by the government’s own law,” Miller said.
“It infuriates me that the McGuinty Liberals across the floor can smuggly hand out our tax dollars to their consultant friends, while leaving hardworking women and men out in the cold. It’s shameful conduct from a government that just doesn’t seem to care.”
