McGuinty Must Support Nortel Pensioners: Miller
Workers facing loss of pensions as executives receive bonuses
QUEEN'S PARK—In Question Period this morning, NDP MPP and Pensions Critic Paul Miller demanded to know why the McGuinty Liberals are doing nothing to support Ontario’s Nortel pensioners.
“It’s completely disgraceful that McGuinty’s Liberals leave our Nortel pensioners to face a 30 per cent loss of their pensions while Quebec actively works to help their Nortel Pensioners regain their full pensions,” stormed Miller.
“While Nortel executives reward themselves with half-million-dollar bonuses for driving this once thriving Canadian company into the ground, the McGuinty government has turned its back on Nortel pensioners,” said Miller.
To add insult to injury, the McGuinty government claims to have taken steps a year ago to do what Quebec has done, but the fact is that it has not, noted Miller.
“The McGuinty Liberals haven’t even taken basic steps on pension reform, despite the recommendations of its own Expert Commission on Pensions, which reported more than a year ago,” he said.
Miller called on the government “to step up to the plate, support our pensioners and bring forward pension legislation to provide coverage to the two-thirds of Ontarians without a workplace pension plan.”
