Liberals on Defensive About Hamilton Job Losses
Miller probes Government on failed strategy to save Siemens jobs
QUEEN'S PARK—Today in Question Period NDP MPP for Hamilton East – Stoney Creek Paul Miller asked the Minister of Consumer Services, the MPP for Hamilton – Mountain, for answers about the Siemens job losses in Hamilton. The Minister of Finance responded with noisy pre-election grandstanding.
Miller demanded to know why the “government went into negotiations with Siemens without much of a plan, and now 550 families are paying the price as $26-an-hour jobs head to North Carolina”. Admitting he was “extremely disappointed” in the failure of negotiations, the Finance Minister nevertheless put on an unruly and defensive display, bizarrely attacking the opposition for not preventing the losses.
Miller condemned the loss of “jobs that put food on the table and pay the bills every month for those families”, and argued that the Liberal government needs to be held accountable for the failure.
Miller said, “This is a serious Hamilton economic issue and the Minister of Hamilton (Hon Sophia Aggelonitis MPP) needs to account for her and her government’s failure”.
