As More Jobs Leave, Still No Plan for Hamilton-Niagara Lakeport closure adds to region's job woes

QUEEN'S PARK—Hamilton East-Stoney Creek NDP MPP Paul Miller says the McGuinty Liberals are still paying lip service to job creation in Hamilton-Niagara as more jobs are lost with the closure of the Lakeport brewery.

“Combined with the recent closure of Siemens, the Lakeport closing brings the total of jobs lost in Hamilton-Niagara to 700 in the last couple of weeks alone,” he said during today’s Question Period.

“This government makes faint claims of new jobs in our region, but a $10.25 hourly minimum wage job is not going to sustain families who have relied on well-paying, permanent, full-time jobs to pay the bills.”

Miller reminded the Premier that Hamilton has an unemployment rate of 8.9 per cent, while Niagara’s is even higher – 11.5 per cent according to Statistics Canada’s latest findings.

“How much worse does it have to get before the McGuinty Liberals finally come up with a real jobs plan for Hamilton-Niagara?” Miller asked.

“The current dire situation begs a real jobs plan to get the Hamilton-Niagara economy back on track. What is Dalton McGuinty waiting for – more plant closures?”
