Miller to Premier: Properly Bury War of 1812 Soldiers
MPP seeks appropriate support for important part of local and Canadian history
QUEEN'S PARK—Hamilton East–Stoney Creek MPP Paul Miller, in question period this morning, called on Premier Dalton McGuinty to stand up for the War of 1812 soldiers improperly buried across from Battlefield Park in Stoney Creek.
“This war is an important part of our history,” said Miller, “yet more than a dozen of our fallen war heroes continue to rest in an inappropriate and unrecognized place.”
Human remains have been visible at the site, causing local advocates to call for immediate action. A private citizen stepped forward last month offering to pay for the reburial; however, additional support from the government will still be necessary to ensure the proper attention is paid to these remains.
“With the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812 fast approaching, it’s time for the government to stop ignoring this national disgrace and get out its cheque book. These individuals paid the ultimate price for our country and their resting place should honour and reflect their sacrifice.”
