McGuinty's Tax Plan Not Working for Families: NDP
Job losses, high electricity costs and low wage growth accompany HST
HAMILTON—NDP MPP Paul Miller says that while the Dalton McGuinty Liberals brag about their economic success, Hamilton-area families aren’t seeing the benefit.
“Thousands of families have lost good jobs that simply haven’t come back,” said Miller. “Dalton McGuinty’s multi-billion tax shift from big business to families has made life more expensive for families and it hasn’t helped our recovery.”
While McGuinty Liberals scramble to have the lowest corporate tax rates, Miller noted that families are dealing with some other numbers:
- 50,000 fewer full-time jobs and 100,000 fewer manufacturing jobs than October 2008 [Statistics Canada, 2011 and 2008]
- Average wage growth (1.1%) that’s well below inflation (2%) [TD Bank, Special Report, Jan. 6, 2011 and Statistics Canada]
- Second most expensive household electricity costs in Canada [Electricity Utility Rate Comparisons, Manitoba Hydro]
- Highest university tuition in Canada [Statistics Canada, 2010 report]
“Those are numbers that affect families," said Miller. “Those are numbers the Premier should worry about.”
